Abstract:
The scientific publishing industry is at the center of scholarly research communication, academic tenure and promotion, and government science and technology policy. Researchers are faced with enduring pressures to publish or perish with increasing options from publishers, journals, and business models. The "Mechanics of Publishing" describes AIP Publishing's mission and journal products, presents an overview of the full publishing industry and the types of publishers, and explains the role of publishers in the scholarly communication enterprise. The modern publishing process is briefly discussed, along with careful delineation of article- and journal-level metrics that are commonplace descriptors of journals' impact, reach, and value.
